Champion Literacy in Sonoma County!

Reach Out and Read Program

What is ROAR?

Reach Out and Read (ROAR) Program was launched in the Sutter Santa Rosa Pediatrics care center in 2020.  ROAR is a primary care-based literacy program endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and funded 100% by philanthropy. Through the program, physicians and care staff provide books to children from birth to five years old during their recommended well child visits. Books, which are provided in either English or Spanish, are age appropriate and focus on promoting developmental skills.

Your donation will be MATCHED!

Susan and Lawrence Amaturo have pledged to match every donation up to $100,000!

Each gift will be doubled, which doubles your impact!

Impact

ROAR currently reaches 2,400 children. With additional donor support, the program will grow to serve 3,600 children.  PLUS, we will increase ROAR to include children up to 10 years of age.

Why is ROAR important?

A child’s future is most influenced during the first five years of life—a time during which the brain is most rapidly developing. Research shows that reading aloud to children during this period helps to strengthen bonding between parent and child, decrease screen time, and increase vocabulary development and literacy. *Research also shows that children who enter school properly prepared are 10 times more likely to meet third grade state standards and are less likely to drop out of high school.
